New Delhi: Opposition parties have again targeted Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar. They have moved a proposal in the Rajya Sabha to remove him, saying he showed bias and did not follow election rules. Around 73 MPs have supported this move.
In a letter to Vice President and Rajya Sabha Chairman C. P. Radhakrishnan, the MPs asked for a three-member committee to investigate the matter. They want a Supreme Court judge, a High Court Chief Justice, and another legal expert in the panel. They also said Kumar should not handle election work until the inquiry is over.
Misconduct Allegations
The opposition said Kumar’s actions after March 15, 2026, were wrong and serious. They believe this has reduced people’s trust in the election system.
Bias in Rules
They also said the Election Commission was not fair in applying the Model Code of Conduct. They pointed to a speech by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on March 18, which was shown live on government channels. The opposition says this gave an unfair benefit.
No Action on Complaints
MPs like Manoj Kumar Jha, P. Santosh Kumar, and M. A. Baby filed complaints on April 19. Around 700 people also sent a request on April 20. But the opposition says no action was taken.
They also claimed that complaints from BJP were handled quickly, especially those against Congress, which raises questions about fairness.
Before Important Elections
This issue has come up before key elections in Tamil Nadu and West Bengal. Earlier too, many MPs had made a similar demand, but it was not accepted due to lack of proof.
