Mumbai: Parents across the country have been frustrated with the high fees charged by private schools, especially the cost of expensive textbooks. Now, a major step has been taken to address this issue.
The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has directed all state governments to ensure that private schools use only National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT) books. The move aims to reduce the financial burden on parents and bring uniformity in education.
The commission also stated that no discrimination should be made between students in government and private schools. All children should have equal access to affordable and standard learning materials.
This decision came after several complaints were received from across India about private schools forcing parents to buy costly books. The matter was discussed in a hearing led by NHRC member Priyank Kanoongo.
Following this, notices have been sent to all state governments and the Union Education Ministry. They have been asked to respond within 30 days.
The issue was raised before the commission by the Namo Foundation, highlighting the growing concern over rising school expenses.
