Mumbai: A major update has come in the case related to minister Nitesh Rane. A court has given a mixed decision in the mud-throwing incident involving an engineer in Kankavali.
In the case linked to the Mumbai-Goa National Highway, the district sessions court cleared Nitesh Rane and around 40 others of serious charges. These included assault and obstruction of a government officer. The case was filed after an incident in July 2019, when mud was allegedly thrown at sub-engineer Prakash Shedekar over the poor condition of roads.
However, the court found Nitesh Rane guilty under Section 504, which is related to disturbing public peace. He has been sentenced to one month in jail and fined ₹1 lakh. At the same time, the court has temporarily stayed the punishment after an appeal request from his side.
The incident had created a lot of controversy at the time. Roads in Kankavali were in bad shape, and during a protest, Shedekar was confronted and attacked with mud. Based on his complaint, several charges were filed against Rane and others.
Meanwhile, senior leader Narayan Rane had earlier expressed strong displeasure over the incident and had publicly apologized for his son’s actions.
Now, even though Rane has been cleared of most charges, the conviction under Section 504 remains. His legal team is planning to challenge this decision in the High Court soon.
