Mumbai: In Maharashtra, the government plans to make Marathi language knowledge compulsory for auto-rickshaw and taxi drivers from May 1.
But drivers are not happy with this decision. Many auto and taxi unions have said they will go on strike from May 4 to protest.
There is also some disagreement inside the ruling party. A leader from Shiv Sena has opposed the rule, which has raised questions about whether the decision could change.
Even with the opposition, the government has taken an important step. The Transport Commissioner has sent the proposal to the Home Department. This means the rule is likely to be implemented.
The government wants drivers to have basic Marathi speaking skills so they can talk easily with passengers.
To do this, changes are planned in the Maharashtra Motor Vehicles Rules 1989.
What will change?
Drivers must know basic Marathi
Marathi will be checked while giving or renewing licenses
This rule will apply to auto and taxi drivers
The government has asked people and groups to share their opinions. They can send suggestions within 30 days after the draft rule is released.
Transport Minister Pratap Sarnaik said this step will help passengers and make services better.
Now, the big question is whether the strike will affect this decision or not.
