Russia Oil, US Tariffs, and India’s New Trade Balance

United States had announced a 25 percent extra tariff on India because India was buying oil from Russia.

New Delhi: United States had announced a 25 percent extra tariff on India because India was buying oil from Russia. This caused tension between India and the US.

Later, India and the US signed a trade deal. After this deal, the tension between the two countries reduced. This trade agreement is important because it will help both countries’ economies grow.

Former US President Donald Trump said on social media that India will stop buying oil from Russia. However, India has not given any official statement about this. Even so, India has already reduced oil purchases from Russia.

In 2024, India was buying about 41 percent of its crude oil from Russia. By December 2025, this number came down to 31 percent.

This change did not happen because of US pressure. India wants to depend less on one country for oil. If oil supply from Russia stops, India could face problems. To avoid this risk, India is buying oil from other countries.

Earlier, Russia was selling oil to India at cheaper prices because many Western countries had put sanctions on Russia. India took advantage of this. Now, Russia has reduced these discounts, so buying oil from Russia is not as profitable.

Another reason is the European Union’s decision. The EU has said it will not buy petrol or diesel made from Russian oil. Because of this pressure, India has also reduced oil imports from Russia.

Because of all these reasons, India is slowly cutting down oil purchases from Russia.
