Mumbai: Maharashtra CM Devendra Fadnavis on Thursday said in State Assembly that decision related to Hindi language policy was actually taken during government led by former CM Uddhav Thackeray. Speaking while replying to the Governor’s address, he accused the opposition of spreading wrong information about Hindi being forced by the current government.
Fadnavis told the House that he presented official proof, including cabinet meeting records, signed documents, old news reports and photographs. According to him, these papers show that discussions and approvals for the language policy had already happened during the previous administration.
The Hindi language issue became controversial after plans were discussed to introduce Hindi as a third language in primary classes under the National Education Policy. Opposition parties claimed it was an attempt to impose Hindi, while the government said Marathi would continue to remain compulsory in schools.
