New Delhi: Supreme Court of India has said in simple words that a wife is not a servant. Marriage means partnership, and both husband and wife should share responsibilities at home.
The court told the husband that helping in cooking and housework is also his duty. Just because a wife does not cook or manage all housework alone, it cannot be called mental cruelty.
This case is about a couple married in 2017 with one child. The husband said his wife argued with family members and did not do household work, so he asked for divorce. A family court first agreed with him, but later the High Court cancelled that decision.
Finally, the Supreme Court also refused to accept the husband’s claim. The judges said that small household issues should not be used as a reason for divorce.
The court made it clear that respect, support, and sharing work are important in a marriage.
