New Delhi: A new political dispute has started in West Bengal after comments related to President Droupadi Murmu. PM Narendra Modi strongly criticised the state government and the All India Trinamool Congress (TMC).
On Saturday, PM Modi said the way the President was treated in West Bengal was “shameful”. He said many people in the country felt hurt because Murmu comes from a tribal community and should be respected. Modi also accused the state government of insulting the President.
The issue started when President Murmu attended a programme in North Bengal. She questioned why the venue of the International Santhal Conference was suddenly changed. Earlier the event was planned in Bidhannagar, but later it was shifted to another place called Goshaipur.
Murmu also said she was surprised that no senior leader from the state government was present to welcome her at the programme.
West Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee later responded to the issue. She said the President’s remarks looked political and claimed that the BJP was trying to damage the image of the state government before the Assembly elections.
Banerjee also explained that during election time she is very busy and cannot attend every event. She said her main focus is on meeting people and working for their rights.
The statements from both sides have now increased the political tension between the BJP and the TMC in West Bengal.
