Nationwide Bharat Bandh on Feb 12 labour law row sparks

A nationwide strike (Bharat Bandh) has been called for Thursday, February 12.

New Delhi :A nationwide strike (Bharat Bandh) has been called for Thursday, February 12. Ten big labour unions are protesting against the new labour laws made by the Central Government. Farmers’ groups and the Congress party have also supported the bandh.

Why are workers protesting?

The unions say the new labour laws are not good for workers. They feel the new rules may:

Reduce job safety

Cut workers’ rights

Make it easier for companies to remove workers

Because of this, they have called for a Bharat Bandh.

Which unions are taking part?

The ten unions include INTUC, AITUC, HMS, CITU, AIUTUC, TUCC, SEWA, AICCTU, LPF and UTUC.

What will be closed?

There is no official order to close schools and colleges.

In some states like Kerala, Karnataka and Odisha, buses and other public transport may be affected.

Some public sector banks may not work properly as bank unions are joining the strike.

There is no official bank holiday.

Essential servicesr are expected to run normally.

The real impact of the Bharat Bandh will be seen on Thursday.
