New Delhi: Senior leader Kapil Sibal has strongly criticized the BJP government over the issue of delimitation (changing boundaries of constituencies). He said that the opposition must strongly oppose any move that harms India’s future and its federal system.
Sibal accused the government of using the Delimitation Commission for political benefit. He claimed that constituencies where the BJP lost elections may be changed or adjusted to help the party win in the future. He also warned that such steps could damage fair elections.
He urged all opposition parties not to support the proposed bill in Parliament. According to him, the constitutional amendment related to this issue will need a two-thirds majority to pass.
Sibal also said that the main aim of the government is to gain political advantage, not to help people. He pointed out that if the government truly wanted to support women, it could have directly given 33% reservation in the current 543 Lok Sabha seats, instead of waiting for census and delimitation.
Another major concern raised by Sibal is the growing gap between North and South India. He said that if the number of seats in Parliament increases, states like Uttar Pradesh may gain more seats compared to states like Tamil Nadu. This, he believes, will give more power to North India and create imbalance.
He warned that such changes could weaken India’s federal structure and create unfair representation, especially for southern states that have controlled population growth better.
Overall, Sibal described the move as politically motivated and called for strong opposition to protect democracy and balance in the country.
