New Delhi: Harish Rana, a young man who had been in a coma for many years, has passed away at All India Institute of Medical Sciences on Tuesday.
He became the first person in India to get legal permission for passive euthanasia, which means stopping life support in a controlled and peaceful way.
Harish was only a student when his life changed in 2013. He fell from a building and suffered a serious head injury. After that, he never regained consciousness. For about 13 years, he stayed alive with the help of machines and medical support.
Earlier this month, the Supreme Court of India allowed his family’s request to stop his life support. The doctors then slowly reduced the support while making sure he felt no pain.
He was moved to a special care unit in Delhi, where doctors closely watched his condition. Medicines were given to keep him calm and comfortable during his final days.
Many people across the country felt emotional after hearing his story. A video from his home also spread online, where prayers were offered for his peaceful end.
This case has started a big discussion in India about dignity, suffering, and the right to die peacefully.
