New Delhi: India has finally reacted to the death of Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. Earlier, the Indian government had not made any public comment, which led to criticism from opposition parties. Now, India’s Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri visited the Iranian Embassy in New Delhi and signed the condolence book to pay respect.
Khamenei was killed during attacks on Iran carried out by Israel and the United States. After the incident, many countries shared their reactions. But India had stayed silent for some time. At the same time, India had clearly condemned Iran’s attack on an American military base in Saudi Arabia.
Opposition parties, including the Indian National Congress, criticised the government. Congress leader Sonia Gandhi said India should have at least expressed sadness over the death, as Iran has been an old friend of India.
Later, India decided to officially express condolences. Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri visited the Iranian Embassy and signed the condolence book in memory of Khamenei.
Meanwhile, reactions also came from other countries. Leaders in Pakistan’s Parliament paid tribute to Khamenei, while China and Russia criticised the actions of the US and Israel.
India has also said that problems between countries should be solved through talks and diplomacy, not through war. The government also said that the safety of Indians living in West Asia is its top priority during the ongoing tensions.
