In a major boost to Mumbai’s transport system, Maharashtra CM Devendra Fadnavis has officially launched the tunnel boring work for the Thane–Borivali twin tunnel (double-decker corridor) project.
This ambitious project aims to improve connectivity between Thane and Borivali, two busy suburban regions that often face heavy traffic congestion. Once completed, the tunnel will significantly reduce travel time and make daily commuting smoother for thousands of people.
The project includes a twin tunnel system, which means two parallel tunnels will be constructed to allow traffic to move in both directions efficiently. It is also part of a larger plan to create a double-decker corridor, where different levels will be used for better traffic management.
Currently, traveling between Thane and Borivali can take more than an hour during peak traffic. However, after the project is completed, the journey time is expected to be cut down to around 20–25 minutes, providing huge relief to commuters.
Officials said the tunnel will pass through hilly terrain, and advanced tunnel boring machines (TBMs) will be used to ensure safe and fast construction. The project is also expected to reduce fuel consumption and pollution by easing traffic jams.
The Thane–Borivali tunnel is seen as a key infrastructure project for Mumbai’s future, helping improve connectivity, support economic growth, and make daily travel faster and more comfortable for residents
