Mumbai: Chaitra Navratri will begin on March 19, 2026, and end on March 27. This festival also marks the Hindu New Year. In many places, people celebrate Gudi Padwa on the same day.
For nine days, people worship Goddess Durga and keep fasts. It is believed that praying during these days brings happiness, peace, and good luck to the family.
Nine Days, Nine Forms
Each day is dedicated to a different form of the goddess. Devotees pray daily and follow simple rituals at home. The last two days, Ashtami and Navami, are very special. On these days, little girls are worshipped and offered food, as they are seen as a form of the goddess.
Ghatasthapana (Kalash Setup)
Navratri starts with a ritual called Ghatasthapana. In 2026, it should be done on March 19 in the morning or around midday.
Simple Puja Method
People clean their homes and take a bath before pooja. Then they:
Fill a pot (Kalash) with water
Place mango leaves and a coconut on top
Sow barley seeds in soil
Light a diya (lamp)
Many people also keep a continuous flame (Akhand Jyoti) for all nine days and follow fasting.
What It Means
Navratri is a time to pray, stay positive, and start fresh. People believe that true devotion during these days brings success, removes problems, and fills life with happiness.
