New Delhi: In a major decision, the Madurai bench of the High Court has given the death penalty to nine policemen in the Sathankulam case in Tamil Nadu.
This case had shocked the whole country. A father and son were taken to the police station because their shop was open for longer than allowed. In custody, they were badly beaten and tortured.
Both of them died on June 22 and 23, 2020, due to the injuries.
The court said that the police, whose job is to protect people, acted in a cruel and inhuman way. It called this case “rarest of the rare.”
During the investigation, the CBI found strong proof, including blood marks on the police station walls.
The guilty include Inspector Sridhar, Sub-Inspectors Balakrishnan and Raghu Ganesh, and six constables. One accused had already died due to COVID-19.
The court also ordered them to give ₹1.40 crore to the victims’ family.
This decision sends a strong message against police brutality.
