New Delhi: A big update has come from Parliament. The Women’s Reservation and Delimitation Bill has not been passed after voting.
Out of 540 members, 528 MPs voted. Around 298 MPs supported the bill, while 230 voted against it. Even though more people were in support, the bill still failed.
This happened because such a bill needs a special majority. It must get two-thirds of the votes. For this, at least 360 votes were required, but the bill got only 298. It fell short by 62 votes.
The bill was meant to give 33% reservation to women in Lok Sabha and state assemblies. Its aim was to increase women’s participation in politics.
Earlier, a similar women’s reservation bill was passed in 2023, but its implementation depends on a new census and delimitation process. Delimitation means changing the boundaries of constituencies based on population.
There has been a lot of disagreement among political parties on this issue. Some leaders are worried that delimitation may change the balance of seats between different states.
Since the bill has not passed, it will not become law now. The government may bring it again in the future with some changes. The discussion on women’s representation in politics is likely to continue.
