New Delhi: The central government is planning a big change to make people’s representation more fair. It may increase Lok Sabha seats from 545 to 850.
A new law, called the Constitution (131st Amendment) Bill, 2026, will be introduced in Parliament by minister Arjun Ram Meghwal. Out of 850 seats, 815 will be for states and 35 for Union Territories.
Big Change in Lok Sabha
This plan will change how the Lok Sabha works. The number of seats is being increased to match today’s population. Growth in cities and movement of people between states are the main reasons for this change.
Changes in Rules
The government will change Article 81 of the Constitution. Seats will be decided based on the latest census data approved by Parliament.
Faster Seat Division Process
The process of dividing seats (delimitation) will become faster. The Election Commission will handle it, and the wait for the next census may be removed.
Women to Get 33% Seats
This plan will also help give 33% reservation to women in Lok Sabha and state assemblies. These seats will change from time to time, and the rule will last for 15 years.
Special Focus on Northeast
States like Arunachal Pradesh, Meghalaya, Mizoram, and Nagaland will get special care to protect tribal representation. Tripura’s current balance will also be kept.
No Change Right Now
The current Lok Sabha will continue as it is. The new system will start only after all changes are completed.
More Bills Coming
The government will also bring other important bills, including:
Seat increase plan
Delimitation Bill 2026
Changes in Union Territory laws
