New Delhi: Even though alcohol is banned in Bihar, people are still dying due to illegal liquor. A recent incident in Motihari has shocked everyone.
So far, four people have died after drinking poisonous liquor. Seven others are in the hospital and are getting treatment. Some of them have even lost their eyesight. Two patients have been moved to another hospital for better care.
Police officer Swarna Prabhat confirmed the deaths. Police have arrested the main accused Naga Rai and a village watchman Bharat Rai. Some women from the accused’s family have also been taken into custody. Another officer, Umashankar Manjhi, has been suspended.
One of the victims, Chandu, was a local young man. His funeral was done quickly. Another victim, Loha Thakur, said he drank liquor mixed with spirit, after which his health became worse and his vision started going.
People living in the area say illegal liquor is still being sold openly. Doctors said the symptoms clearly show poisoning from toxic alcohol.
A similar incident had happened in Motihari three years ago, where about 45 people died. Such repeated cases are raising serious questions about the system.
Earlier this year, in Rohtas, five people also died under suspicious conditions after attending a wedding, but the exact reason was not officially confirmed.
