New Delhi: A heated argument broke out in the Lok Sabha between the Central government and Opposition leaders over the women’s reservation and delimitation Bills.
The debate started after Akhilesh Yadav questioned why the government was moving quickly on the women’s reservation Bill. He said the government should first complete the national census before taking decisions on delimitation.
Yadav made it clear that his party supports reservation for women, but does not agree with linking it to delimitation. He also demanded a caste census after the general census is completed.
In response, Home Minister Amit Shah said that the census process has already started in the country. He added that the government has decided to include caste data in the census.
Shah also strongly opposed the idea of religion-based reservation. He said giving reservation on the basis of religion is against the Constitution.
The government introduced three important Bills in the House. These include a constitutional amendment related to women’s reservation, a delimitation Bill, and another Bill to apply these changes in Union Territories like Delhi, Puducherry, and Jammu and Kashmir.
The issue has now turned into a major political debate, with both sides standing firm on their views.
