Mumbai: Maharashtra government has cancelled the 5% SBC reservation given to the Muslim community.
The government has removed the official order and circular related to this reservation. It has also cancelled caste certificates and caste validity certificates issued under this category.
Why Was It Cancelled?
The Bombay High Court had earlier stopped this reservation.
The 5% reservation was started about 12 years ago. It was given to socially and educationally backward Muslims. It was used for:
Government jobs
College and school admissions
In 2014, the reservation was introduced through an ordinance. But this ordinance was not turned into a proper law before the deadline. Because of this, the law automatically ended.
After that, the High Court had also put a stay on it.
What Has the Government Done Now?
Now the state government has:
Cancelled the 5% SBC reservation
Cancelled the government orders related to it
Cancelled caste and caste validity certificates under this category
This decision has brought an end to the reservation that was announced 12 years ago.
