New Delhi: Women’s Reservation Law has started from April 16, 2026. The government released an official notification while Parliament was still discussing the issue late at night.
This law gives 33% seats to women in the Lok Sabha and state assemblies. However, many people are asking why the law was made active while discussions were still going on.
Even though the law has started, women will not get its benefit right now. The reservation will be applied only after the next census and seat division process (delimitation) is completed.
The government said that the 106th Constitutional Amendment Act, 2023 is now in force.
This law, also called the Nari Shakti Vandan Act, was passed in September 2023. It is seen as an important step to increase women’s participation in politics.
