Mumbai: The Maharashtra Assembly has passed a new vehicle tax law with full support from all members. The aim is to reduce pollution and improve transport facilities in the state.
Transport Minister Pratap Sarnaik said that higher tax will now be charged on old and polluting vehicles.
What will change?
Two-wheelers: ₹2,000 → ₹4,000
Petrol vehicles: ₹3,000 → ₹6,000
Diesel vehicles: ₹3,500 → ₹7,000
This amount will be paid once for five years.
Why this decision?
The government wants to control air pollution and push people to use cleaner vehicles like BS-6 and electric vehicles.
Where will the money go?
The state will earn around ₹160 crore more every year. This money will be used for:
Better roads
Safer transport system
Vehicle testing centres
Driver training
Good news for industry
There is also relief for the construction sector. A limit of ₹30 lakh has been fixed on tax for crane vehicles, which may help boost development work.
The government said this plan will increase income without putting extra pressure on the state budget. Leaders from all parties supported the move and called it an important step for Maharashtra’s growth.
