Mumbai: Maharashtra government has cancelled the 5% reservation given to socially and educationally backward Muslims in the state. The government led by Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis has taken this decision. Because of this, Muslim students will no longer get admission in colleges and other educational institutes under this 5% quota.
The All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) has strongly opposed the move. The party’s Maharashtra president Imtiaz Jaleel criticised the government. He said the decision is unfair and has disappointed many Muslim families. In a post on X, he said that instead of supporting education in the community, the government has removed an important help.
He also said that earlier the court had noted that the education level among Muslims was low. That is why the 5% reservation was introduced in 2014. But now the government has ended it. Still, he requested Muslim boys and girls not to stop studying and to continue focusing on education.
What was the 5% reservation?
In 2014, the state had announced 5% reservation for Muslims under a special backward category in education and government jobs. However, the decision was challenged in the Bombay High Court. The court had put a stay on it, and later the rule was not turned into a proper law in time. Because of this, it became invalid.
