New Delhi: Government has officially announced new rules for content made using Artificial Intelligence (AI). These rules will mainly affect social media platforms and digital companies. From 20 February 2026, any content created with AI tools must clearly mention that it is AI-generated.
In recent months, there has been a sharp rise in deepfake videos, fake images, and false audio clips on the internet. Because of this, it has become very hard for common users to tell what is real and what is fake. The government believes that such content has increased cases of misinformation, fraud, and damage to personal reputation. The new rules aim to reduce these risks.
The government has also clearly defined what synthetic content means. It includes any audio, video, photo, or visual created using computers or algorithms that looks real enough to make people believe it is true. Content that shows a person or event in a misleading way will fall under this category. However, normal activities like basic editing, color correction, translation, or document preparation will not be considered synthetic content, as long as they do not create fake or misleading material.
