Mumbai: In a major political development in the Baramati Assembly by-election, the Congress party has decided to withdraw its candidate, making the path easier for Sunetra Pawar to win.
Senior leaders including Sharad Pawar, Supriya Sule, and Rohit Pawar had earlier requested Congress to make the election unopposed. Later, Deputy Chief Minister Sunetra Pawar also personally called the state Congress president and urged them to avoid a contest.
Since the last date for withdrawing nominations was today, leaders from both factions of the Nationalist Congress Party made strong efforts to ensure the election would be uncontested.
After these discussions, Congress took a big decision to pull back its candidate from Baramati. The announcement was hinted at by Congress leader Vijay Wadettiwar.
Wadettiwar said that the decision was taken after considering the overall situation and the sentiments of local leaders. He also mentioned that discussions were held with the party’s central leadership before moving ahead.
With Congress stepping back, Sunetra Pawar’s victory in the by-election now looks almost certain.
