Mumbai: In Maharashtra, a new rule has created tension between the government and auto and taxi drivers. Transport Minister Pratap Sarnaik has announced that all auto-rickshaw and taxi drivers must know the Marathi language. This rule will be strictly enforced from May 1, which is celebrated as Maharashtra Day.
The government also plans to start special checking drives from that day. Drivers who do not follow the rule may face action.
However, many drivers are unhappy with this decision. The Mumbai Autorickshaw Men's Union, one of the biggest unions, has opposed the move. The union has announced a statewide strike starting from May 4.
Reports, say that around 15 lakh drivers across the state may join the protest. Out of these, nearly 5 lakh drivers are from the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR).
The union warned that this strike could badly affect daily travel, as fewer autos will be available on the roads. They also said that if the government does not cancel the rule, protests will continue every day.
Before starting the strike, the union plans to meet the minister on April 28 and submit a request to withdraw the decision before it is implemented.
